Entry requirement for International Students

To study a Master of Social Work in Australia, you typically need:

  • A Bachelor’s degree (preferably in social sciences, psychology, or related field)

  • IELTS 7.0 overall (or equivalent), with no band less than 7.0

  • Some universities may require relevant academic background or bridging units

For applicants from non-related background

Entry requirements are consistent with the Australian Association of Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards (ASWEAS) that defines Social and Behavioural Sciences topics as those that focus on Psychology and Human Development and the relationship between individuals and society.

 

​If students do not have relevant study background, then they are required to enrol in the Graduate Certificate program related to Social Science, Counselling, Psychotherapy, Human Behaviour etc. It can not be a random course; the pre-requisite course is set out by the University. This course is generally known as a pathway program.

1. Is there an option that I can just study 2 years and enter the Master program without enrolling for the pathway program?
Yes, it could be possible. Non-related background students can possibly enter the program directly and complete the course within 2 years. However, options are limited.

There's 2 types of courses within the construction sector. One which requires a student to study 1-2 years and then also requires to have at least 1 year post study work experience before they can possibly be eligible to apply for a Migration Skills Assessment. There are also, Technical Trades and Advanced Diploma in IT, Construction courses which may also make you eligible to apply for a Migration Skills Assessment without having a 1 Year post study work experience. Apart from construction, fast-track courses like Nursing, Teaching Community Services also are in high demand. Completing these courses along with sufficient english test score is sometimes enough to apply for a Skills Assessment; work experience is not required.
