Australian Migration Skills Assessment

To apply for Permanent Residency in Australia through Skilled Independent Visa or, State Nominated Migration program, an applicants needs to have a positive migration skills assessment. If you're already in Australia on a temporary visa, your migration journey doesn’t begin with lodging a visa.

The Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) is essential for individuals applying for a skilled migration visa through the Department of Home Affairs. It evaluates whether an applicant has the skills and experience at the required level to work in Australia in their chosen occupation.

A positive MSA outcome confirms that the applicant’s qualifications and experience align with Australian standards for the nominated role, facilitating the visa process and helping ensure a smooth transition into the Australian workforce.

For certain occupations, a relevant degree alone may be sufficient to meet the requirements. However, for others, additional criteria may apply, such as post-study work experience, as is often the case in fields like IT. In some professions, such as teaching, a higher English language proficiency score may also be necessary to satisfy eligibility standards. It begins with a skills assessment - the single most important step that determines whether your PR pathway is viable. A skills assessment verifies that your qualifications and/or work experience match an Australian occupation standard. Without it, your migration process cannot move forward.

Your occupation determines your assessing body; for example

  • VETASSESS:  business, marketing, HR, admin roles

  • CPA Australia: accounting and finance

  • Engineers Australia: All engineering disciplines

  • Trades Recognition Australia: Trades like chef, carpenter, electrician

Some occupations require post study work experience, some don't. Your overseas degree sometimes might be sufficient enough to attain a positive migration skills assessment.

After attaining a Positive Skills Assessment, you can:

  • Lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI)

  • Apply for state nomination

  • Move into PR or sponsorship pathways
