ASQA Cancels RTO Registrations for Non-Compliance and Illegal Activities: What It Means for Students and Future Pathways

Writer: Newsted GlobalNewsted Global

The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) has recently made a significant move to ensure the integrity of Australia’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector by cancelling the registrations of several Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). These organisations were found to be involved in illegal activities and failing to meet the required national training standards. As a result, over 6,900 qualifications issued by these RTOs have been revoked, and former students may now face challenges in using their qualifications for employment or migration purposes.

In this blog, we’ll discuss the impact of ASQA’s actions, the RTOs affected, and what this means for current and prospective international students.

ASQA's Regulatory Action

The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) is responsible for regulating RTOs in Australia, ensuring that they meet national training standards and provide high-quality education. Unfortunately, some RTOs have not complied with these standards, leading to serious consequences.

ASQA’s investigation revealed that these providers were issuing qualifications to students without the proper training, assessments, or adherence to required competency standards. These actions are not only illegal but undermine the credibility of the VET sector.

RTOs Affected by ASQA’s Action

Two major RTOs have been directly impacted by ASQA’s regulatory decision, with hundreds of qualifications revoked:

  1. DSA Ventures Pty Ltd (Australian Academy of Elite Education 45442)Over 550 qualifications were cancelled. Investigations revealed that students were issued certifications without completing the required assessments, violating national training standards.

  2. Luvium Pty Ltd (Australia Education & Career College 52865)More than 6,400 qualifications were revoked due to inadequate training and a lack of competency-based assessments. These violations occurred between January 2023 and October 2024, leading to significant concerns regarding the legitimacy of qualifications issued during this period.

These cancellations highlight the importance of choosing accredited and compliant RTOs when pursuing education in Australia. With such violations affecting thousands of students, it’s critical to understand how this impacts future pathways, including migration opportunities.

Impact on Students and Employers

For students who have completed their studies with these RTOs, the revocation of qualifications means their certifications are now invalid. This could significantly affect those who are seeking employment in Australia or looking to use their qualifications as part of a skilled migration application.

  • Employment Opportunities: Students holding revoked qualifications may find it difficult to meet the necessary criteria for certain jobs in Australia. Employers may now question the validity of these qualifications, which could prevent students from obtaining employment in their field.

  • Migration Pathways: For international students relying on their qualifications to earn points toward permanent residency, the cancellation of these qualifications could be a significant setback. Without valid qualifications, students may no longer meet the criteria for certain visa pathways.

It’s essential for students impacted by these cancellations to seek advice on how to proceed. For those who have already been issued qualifications from these institutions, it may be necessary to pursue alternative training with a compliant RTO to regain their eligibility for employment and migration purposes.

ASQA’s Ongoing Efforts to Protect the VET Sector

ASQA has committed to maintaining high standards in the VET sector by ensuring that RTOs comply with all relevant regulations and standards. The authority works closely with other government agencies to address the consequences of non-compliant training providers, especially when it comes to the repercussions for affected students and workplaces.

ASQA’s cancellation of RTO registrations serves as a reminder of the importance of choosing accredited institutions that adhere to the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) and comply with industry standards. Students must be vigilant when selecting RTOs to ensure they are enrolling in providers that operate within the law.
