The Australian Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that Subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa invitation rounds will be conducted every quarter in the 2025/26 migration program year. This decision provides a more structured and transparent system for prospective skilled migrants, offering clarity on when invitations will be issued.
Key Update from Home Affairs
According to official advice, Home Affairs intends to hold four invitation rounds per year, each spaced three months apart. The schedule is now more predictable, allowing applicants to plan their Expression of Interest (EOI)Â submissions, skill assessments, and English testing around known timelines.
Greater Predictability
For many applicants, uncertainty around when rounds would occur has been a significant source of stress. Quarterly scheduling introduces a consistent pattern, helping candidates align their applications with invitation timings.
Improved Transparency
A fixed structure means applicants can track their progress with more confidence. This change reduces ambiguity and helps ensure the process is fairer and easier to follow.
Ongoing Competitiveness
While the schedule is clearer, competition remains high. Previous rounds have shown varying points thresholds:
Trades and construction roles: often 65-70 points.
Healthcare roles: around 80 points.
STEM professionals: frequently 90+ points.
Specialist occupations: some above 100 points.
Applicants must continue to keep their EOIs updated and aim for the highest points possible to remain competitive.
The First Round of 2025/26
The first invitation round for the new program year was held on 21 August 2025. Results included:
Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent visa):Â 6,887 invitations.
Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional - Family Sponsored):Â 150 invitations.
This round reflected the government’s focus on priority sectors, particularly health, engineering, and trades, while also balancing broader labour market needs.
Looking Ahead
The confirmation of quarterly rounds signals a stronger framework for Australia’s skilled migration program. For applicants, it means:
Regular opportunities to receive invitations.
Greater certainty in migration planning.
Clearer alignment with Australia’s workforce priorities.
While competition for invitations remains strong, the introduction of a fixed timetable provides much-needed stability for skilled workers seeking a future in Australia.
