Tasmania 2026-27 Migration Program is Now Open

Tasmania’s 2026-27 Skilled Migration Program is now open, with Registrations of Interest (ROI) already open and the first invitation round held on 20 August 2026. With 2,050 nomination places available for 2026-27, applicants can now start preparing and submitting their ROI in line with the updated program requirements.

First Invitation Round

For the first round of the 2026-27 program, Tasmania issued:

The first round shows a strong preference for higher-priority ROIs, particularly for Subclass 190. Of the 67 Subclass 190 invitations issued, 65 went to Gold Pass candidates and only 2 went to Green Pass candidates.

For Subclass 491, 26 invitations were issued, including 3 Gold Pass invitations and 23 further invitations. The lowest score invited was 580 points for Subclass 190 and 97 points for Subclass 491.

The published lowest score at assessment is based on a rolling three-month average of the lowest score resulting in an invitation where the ROI is invited and the priority attributes claimed are verified.

Applicants should therefore be careful when claiming priority attributes. If an attribute cannot be verified and the applicant's score falls below the relevant threshold, the nomination application may be declined. Gold Pass applicants who do not meet the Gold priority attribute may also be declined regardless of their total points.

More Places, But Competition Remains

Tasmania has received 2,050 nomination places for 2026-27, an increase of 200 places compared with the previous program year.

The allocation is:

  • 1,250 places for Subclass 190

  • 800 places for Subclass 491

Migration Tasmania is aiming to issue around 37 Subclass 190 invitations and around 26 Subclass 491 invitations each week that are expected to continue through the program year, with a pause over the Christmas period.

Having more nomination places is positive for applicants, but it does not mean every eligible applicant will receive an invitation. Tasmania continues to rank ROIs through its Gold, Green, Orange Plus and Orange priority system, with higher-priority candidates considered first.

Changes to the TSE Gold Pass

One of the more significant changes for 2026-27 affects the Tasmanian Skilled Employment pathway. The TSE Gold Pass now requires a minimum of 30 hours per week from one employer. This is a minimum requirement rather than an average calculated across the qualifying period.

There is a narrow exception for applicants working a regular fortnightly roster that totals at least 60 hours. Importantly, hours from multiple jobs can no longer be combined to meet the Gold Pass requirement. This means applicants who previously relied on combining hours across different employers should review their position carefully under the new settings

Employment and Salary Requirements Have Changed

Tasmania has also adjusted the employment-length brackets across the TSE, TSG and TER pathways. These changes can affect how applicants are ranked and how many points they may receive for their employment history.

Salary thresholds have also increased in line with the new Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT). Applicants should therefore check their current salary against the 2026-27 requirements rather than relying on figures from the previous program year. Even a small difference in salary or employment duration can affect an applicant's priority position.

Subclass 491 Overseas Pathway

Applicants considering the Subclass 491 Overseas Skilled Occupation Profile pathway should take note of another major change. The Overseas Skilled Occupation Profile pathway will not receive invitations during the 2026-27 program year.

This does not mean all overseas applicants are excluded from Tasmania's skilled migration program. The Subclass 190 Overseas Applicant pathway for eligible health and education professionals with a relevant Tasmanian job offer remains available. Applicants outside Australia should therefore check which overseas pathway applies to their circumstances before preparing an ROI.

What Applicants Should Keep in Mind

The first invitation round gives us an early indication of how Tasmania is managing its new allocation, but it is still only the beginning of the program year.

If you are already in Tasmania or planning to use Tasmania as part of your skilled migration strategy, it is worth reviewing your profile against the 2026-27 settings rather than relying on last year's requirements.

In particular, check:

  • Your priority tier

  • Your employment duration

  • Your weekly hours and employer arrangements

  • Your salary against the updated threshold

  • Your points score

  • Whether your claimed priority attributes can be supported by evidence

  • Whether your intended pathway is still receiving invitations

Tasmania's invitation rounds will continue to provide a clearer picture of the level of competition as more ROIs are assessed and nomination places are used.

Stay Across the 2026-27 Tasmania Program

The first invitation round is an important starting point for the new program year, but Tasmania's settings and invitation activity can change as the year progresses.

If you are preparing an ROI or already have one in the system, make sure your information reflects the current 2026-27 requirements and that you understand how your priority attributes affect your position.
